2024 The Solid Waste Clog-Resistant Smart Drain was commissioned by Sanmark and Sanota in Sri Lanka. It has received two accolades at the Australian Good Design Awards, winning Best in Class for Engineering Design and a Gold in the Engineering Design category.
Discussions are underway with manufacturers to design and build the system, making it available worldwide.

Nadeesha Chandrasena and the team of co-inventors, including Dr. Khamaruzaman Bin Wan Yusof, Dr. Zahiraniza Mustaffa, Sujeewa Kokawala, Dr. Ransirimal Fernando, Janaka Prasanna Kuruppu, and Darshana Wimukthi, obtained a patent for the technology behind the Solid Waste Clog-Resistant Smart Storm Drain.
The system also serves as a Smart and Interactive Flash Flood Mitigation System, showcasing its multifunctional capabilities.
Nadeesha Chandrasena was awarded Permanent Residency under the Global Talent Visa program for significant contributions to the circular economy sector, specifically the development of the Solid Waste Clog-Resistant Smart Storm Drain.
Conducted by Nadeesha Chandrasena under the guidance of Dr. Khamaruzaman W. Yusof and Dr. Zahiraniza Mustaffa, the research focused on managing frequent flash floods in humid tropical environments through drainage infrastructure design.
Nadeesha Chandrasena was selected as a finalist in MIT's 35 Innovators Under 35 program for groundbreaking work on new technology development and the creative application of existing technologies to solve global challenges.
Won the Gold Medal for the initial product design.
Nadeesha Chandrasena was awarded a three-month Fellowship to Singularity University at NASA Research Park, funded by a $40,000 AUD Fellowship from Google.
