Smart Drain Field Deployment: Pioneering Urban Water
Management

Filtered stormwater flows through the Smart Drain’s bottom channel, which is equipped with sensors for real-time flow monitoring and community alerts.

The Smart Drain Field Deployment Project began in January 2025 as a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative by Access Engineering Sri Lanka. In this first phase, two critical storm drain stretches in Colombo and Kandy are being upgraded with Smart Drain Technology to enhance urban flood resilience and improve water management.

Project Sites

1.Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board (SLAEB), Colombo

The SLAEB site features a newly constructed open drain that experiences frequent overflows due to solid waste blockages and an underground obstruction at the outflow point. The Smart Drain retrofit will prevent solid waste accumulation and improve water flow efficiency. This upgrade will also mitigate the environmental impact on the nearby receiving water canal, currently affected by sediment and plastic pollution.

2.Ali Mudukkuwa, Kandy Municipal Council (KMC)

Ali Mudukkuwa, a densely populated urban area with a nearly century-old drainage system, struggles with severe overflow issues caused by sediment buildup and solid waste clogs. The existing drains are narrow, deteriorated, and highly inefficient. Smart Drain Technology will restore the dysfunctional drainage stretches, enhance water flow, and reduce flood risks during heavy rainfall. This intervention is crucial for boosting infrastructure resilience in this historically significant yet heavily congested area.

Building a Blueprint for Urban Resilience

These pilot projects are designed to demonstrate the scalability and effectiveness of Smart Drain Technology in addressing urban drainage inefficiencies and reducing flood risks. They serve as practical examples of how modernized infrastructure can transform water management in both new and legacy drainage systems.
